SMART Exercise Class Descriptions Intensity Descriptions
Level I: This class is suitable for participants who may not have exercised before, have not exercised in a long time or for those individuals who have recently completed the SMART In-Home program. Level I is for people with significant limitations to exercise who require close supervision. Participants level of mobility and ability is low. Most of the exercises are performed in a seated position.
Level II: This class is suitable for participants that have a moderate level of ability and mobility and can follow instructions well. Individuals may have some limitations and require a moderate level of supervision. Participants have been or are used to being physically active. This class may incorporate a combination of standing and seated exercises but, where possible, Level II participants are encouraged to do more standing throughout the duration of the class.
Level III: This class is suitable for participants that have good understanding of structured exercise programming and have a high level of ability and mobility. Individuals have few limitations and are able to manage well incorporating options for progression.
Disclaimer: The SMART program is designed so that any participant can attend any of the sites that are most convenient for them. The class format can be modified for different levels of mobility and ability. The intensities listed above serve only as a guideline. Any participant has the option to sit for a portion of the class or the entire session.
